Just as Ash and friends FINALLY reach Rustboro City... it's still one day's walk away! Not all hope is lost, as there's a Pokemon Contest building nearby! Ash even gets vital info from coordinator Chaz on the gym and trains with Pikachu to learn the steel type Iron Tail move. Even though the contest entries were full, May still gets a taste for the contest by being coordinator Janet's assistant. Along with Mr. Contesta and Mr. Sukizou as judges, Rustboro City's Nurse Joy joins in.

A Pokemon Contest Judge's job is to form an opinions based on first impressions and performances. Things they consider include a pokemon's development and level of cooperation with its trainer. Joy and Mr. Sukizou seem to be more lenient in giving points compared to Mr. Contesta.
