Canon

Odale's Joy is the first Joy that we encounter in the Hoenn region! Much like the first Joy in Viridian City, she is introduced as a standard Joy for first-time viewers new to the series. It's presumed much like in Johto and Kanto, she registers Ash for the Hoenn League. With May's Torchic fainting from her first battle with a family of Azurill, Marill, and Azumarill... Joy explains Torchic needs a night of rest, and sees the beginner trainer May is tired from the journey as well.

"You battled a water type with your fire type? LMAO U NOOB!"

Ash and May made it to the Pokemon Center thanks to passing by some ruins that Professor Alden is researching and he points them in the right direction. Later, he has supper with them in the dining area, then shows them the room Joy generously gives him to aid his research. In the sub, the room is specifically a "research storehouse" so maybe Joy herself or others have attempted at researching the mysterious ruins with Alden adding to it?

During the night, a gang of people decked out in red uniforms arrive. Team Magma sneak in, cutting off the lights and get Alden to come with them to open the door to the secret chamber in the ruins. Alden refuses until Nurse Joy walks by the room with a flashlight to check on him, but is held hostage by the grunts. To keep Joy and the other hostages safe, Alden agrees to the gang's demands.

Ash, May, and Nurse Joy are locked in the storage room. In the dub, she guesses the gang want to go into the ruins, but doesn't know who they are. In the sub, she relays that the other trainers must've been locked in other rooms as well. Since the power is cut off, the pokemon staying at the center are in danger, including May's Torchic!

Ash, Pikachu, and May crawl through an air shaft while Joy waits with hands clasped in worry.

Their mission? Find the master key at the front desk and switch on the power reserve! With that checked off, the trio let Joy unlock the rooms the other trainers are in. Assuring them she'll be fine, the trainers head out to the ruins. Lucky for Alden, even after giving in to Team Magma's demands, they find nothing of interest within the chamber except wall art depictions of ancient pokemon living peacefully with humans. They leave by helicopter just as Ash and May arrive.

The next morning Nurse Joy has called Officer Jenny to investigate the incident. But with no clues, the mysterious gang and their intentions are left a mystery. Not all is lost, as Alden can hardly sleep while exploring more of the ruins with live ancient pokemon like Relicanth. Presumably Joy will let him stay in the current room to continue his research.

Note: Ash is the one to show May around the Pokemon Center. We get a look at the dining room with comfy booths, the bedrooms where there are two bunkbeds to make room for 4 trainers to sleep in, and a lobby where trainers can share info about Pokemon much like in the games. We are also shown the same machine used in the games: instead of putting pokeballs in a slot to heal pokmeon to full health, it scans inside the pokeballs and Joy can check on the pokemon's vital signs at a glance.

May says the food isn't HALF BAD (paraphrasing), so you can expect some great meals!

Ash warns that Pokemon Centers are for breaks in-between heavy training, as if May suggested they were on vacation when she was merely impressed by the services. You got a weedle up your ass Ash? Or do you know from experience how testy Joy gets if you don't leave the center after a certain amount of time? Get out of there so Joy can have some alone time with Alden!

Headcanon

- You know she has a crush on Alden! He's just too cute!

- Joy has been curious about the ruins herself. It's the only interesting thing going on in boring ol' Oldale Town.

- Since Odale Town is close by to Professor Birch's laboratory, Joy is often helping beginner trainers.
