Ash, Misty, and Brock look for a room to spend the night in, but this Joy sadly apologizes and explains the center is so full that there are even people sleeping in the lobby!

With the emphasis on Cinnabar being a tourist trap due to the hot springs being popular, it is uncertain if Joy actually gets a chance to perform her nursing duties. Brock comments that it doesn't seem like the people staying at the center have many pokemon at all. Blaine refuses to battle tourists who aren't serious about obtaining badges, so surely Joy has at least done check ups for Blaine in the past.

The Joys of Cinnabar Island are known to be distant from the rest of the family in Kanto. Absent from family gatherings and the like, Joy's duty is first and foremost keeping a dire secret from the family: their origin. As such, it's a burden on the shoulder's of whoever is duty-bound to Cinnabar. The previous Cinnabar nurse, Granny Joy's sister, had no children of her own so an heir was chosen from a graduating class of young Joys.

Joy was chosen for passing a secret test of character during clinical practices. Despite being initially sold on taking over a center on a vibrant island, learning of the family secret and the demands it brings into her everyday life left Joy a shell of her former self. While she can still act like a standard Joy during the day, it is merely an act to hide her true nature. Unfeeling, blasé, and envious of the carefree lives of her family, she hides during the night to reflect in solitude.

Rumors of strange happenings on the island prompts Granny Joy to warn the family to stay away from Cinnabar. The past Old Shore Wharf Joy had visited the island on one occasion, then returned to her center only to pass away soon after. The drastic personality change of her sister and granddaughter after inheriting the center confirms Granny Joy's suspicions of a curse if not something more sinister to cause the misfortune.
